Griffin Jr. of Milledgeville retired from the U.S. Army as a colonel in 1990 after 23 years that included combat helicopter missions in Vietnam, and later ran his family's business, Slater's Funeral Home. In 1994 he won a state Senate seat, becoming the first African American since Reconstruction to win a majority-white Georgia Senate district, and served until 1999; he was mayor of Milledgeville from 2002 to 2005 and ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 1998 and secretary of state in 2022. He won House District 149 in 2024, took office in January 2025, and won the May 2026 Democratic primary with 79% over Ross Sheppard.
